Conexiones: A technology-based approach to developing literacy in migrant students Since 1992, over 200 migrant students have been introduced to computer-mediated applications and computer-based networking through university bridge activities which support the construction/development of on-line projects such as newspapers, journals and research. In addition to the online versions, students also construct traditional paper-versions of their work to share with family members and teachers in an effort to encourage continued learning in the home. The newspaper was constructed to deliver instruction on computing and telecommunication skills, including basic computing and file management, wordprocessing, computer graphic design, desktop publishing, and email. Participants engage in activities designed to assist in their development of bilingual literacy including electronic and verbal communications, expressive and descriptive writing, contextualized reading, and the development of multi-level interactions with members of the university community (i.e.; students, faculty, program directors, etc). College of Education faculty provided instructional design expertise for the project, bringing to the group their skill and experience in bilingual education, computer interface design, assessment and evaluation.
